It doesn’t have to be costly or time consuming to develop an effective selection system. There are a few simple guidelines to consider that, if implemented correctly, will greatly increase your chances of hiring top performers and avoiding the problems mentioned in the previous section.

1) Analyze the job to find out why people are successful or unsuccessful and use that information to guide hiring decisions.

The first step is establishing the primary objectives for the job in question; in other words, asking yourself and other stakeholders why the position exists.

Once the job purpose has been uncovered, you can then turn your attention to understanding how people achieve this objective; this “how” will determine the qualities necessary for success, which should become prerequisites for any new hire.

Remember to not only explore basic qualifications and job tasks but also discuss the attributes that make someone exceptional in the role. In other words, why it is that your best employees are outperforming others despite performing the same tasks outlined in the standard job description. Otherwise, you will tend to hire average or capable employees, not top performers.
